Bodybuilders Terrence Ruffin and Urs Kalecinski Team Up for Some Intense Arm Training

The reigning and two-time Arnold Classic (AC) Classic Physique champion Terrence Ruffin and 2022 Boston Pro Classic Physique winner Urs Kalecinski came together for a savage arm workout on April 4, 2022. They were joined by Ruffin’s coach Joe Bennett for the training session.

The two Classic Physique titans are having a great 2022. Ruffin kicked off his historic year at the 2022 AC, where he became the first Classic Physique bodybuilder to win that title twice. Kalecinski established himself as a contender for Chris Bumstead‘s Classic Physique Olympia throne by winning his last two shows — the 2022 Boston Pro and Kuwait Classic Pro. The German bodybuilder was also a runner-up at the 2022 AC behind “Ruff Diesel” and got a fourth-place finish at the 2021 Olympia behind Bumstead, Ruffin, and Breon Ansley. “We got goals — Olympia December 2022, and I’m really excited to start making the improvements I need to make to be at my best at that show. Today is day number one [of the Olympia prep],” says Ruffin to open the video in what appears to be his kitchen.

Before heading out to the gym, the two-time AC champ hopped on a FaceTime call with his diet coach Hyacine Nassir who told him he could pack on an additional 10-12 pounds of lean muscle before the 2022 Olympia weekend scheduled for Dec. 16-18 in Las Vegas, NV.

Ruffin and Kalecinski’s Arm Workout

Ruffin and Bennett met up with Kalecinski at The Pro’s Gym in downtown Columbus, OH, and kicked off their workout with cable lateral raises. The trio followed it up with a variation of the overhead cable triceps extension. While performing the triceps exercise, both bodybuilders kept their elbows in front of their bodies and their upper arms parallel to the floor, making the exercise look like a hybrid of the overhead cable triceps extension and cable skull crusher. To better isolate the long head of the triceps, they kept their elbows flared out.

Ruffin, Kalecinski, and Bennett wrapped up their workout by supersetting the chest-supported cable biceps curl with the seated cable biceps curl. The isometric movements focused on their biceps peaks as they kept their elbows pinned in place to stunt momentum. For their final last set, the bodybuilders performed a drop set on each exercise and a static hold on the seated cable biceps curl to flush their biceps with blood and lactic acid. The IFBB Pros wrapped up their training session with a post-workout photoshoot wherein they hit bodybuilding poses.

Brutal Isolation Exercise-Focused Arm Workout

Here is a summary of Ruffin, Kalecinski, and Bennett’s workout. The bodybuilders didn’t reveal the exact number of sets and reps performed in the training session.

  • Cable Side Laterals Raises
  • Overhead Cable Tricep Extension
  • Superset: Chest-Supported Cable Bicep Curl + Seated Cable Bicep Curl

Classic Physique has fast become one of the most popular bodybuilding divisions in the IFBB Pro League. Introduced in 2016 by the National Physique Committee (NPC) and IFFB Pro League, Classic Physique favors athletes with mass, but with sharp conditioning and symmetry — a strong V-taper and narrow waist aesthetic reminiscent of bodybuilding’s Golden Era from the 1950s to 1970s.

Looking Forward

Both Ruffin and Kalecinski are qualified for the 2022 Olympia. According to the 2022 Olympia Qualification System, Ruffin earned his qualification via his runner-up ranking at the 2021 Classic Physique Olympia. Kalecinski earned his ticket to the 2022 Olympia by winning the Boston Pro show.

The 2022 Classic Physique Olympia is expected to have a stacked roster. Ruffin and Kalecinski are two of the top bodybuilders in the division at the moment and neither is expected to compete again before the 2022 Mr. O. Ruffin tailed Bumstead the past two years at the Olympia, with back-to-back runner-up finishes. Kalecinski hit the scene with a stellar debut in 2021. Although the 2022 Olympia is eight months away at the time of this article’s publication, the anticipation to see Bumstead can fend off Ruffin, Kalecinski, and the rest of the field has already started to mount.
