The 10 Surrey parks that will see outdoor gyms installed for free exercise

A number of outdoor gyms are being installed in one area of Surrey to encourage residents to get active in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic. Spelthorne Borough Council is rolling out 10 new outdoor gyms to parks across the borough, opening across the months of April and May 2022.

The first of the new gyms opened at Lammas Park in Staines on April 6. Free of charge to use and suitable for all fitness levels, the equipment includes machines for cardio workouts, strength, balance and flexibility, including parallel bars, weight systems, bikes, benches, health walkers, cross trainers and air walkers.

Georgie Delaney, joint managing director of the Great Outdoor Gym Company, said: “We were delighted to win the contract to roll-out ten fantastic TGO gyms in Spelthorne. Every gym offers something different, and we are excited to work with Spelthorne to activate their potential. Movement is a such a powerful medicine, and we can all feel more positive about our future by getting together and getting active.”

Cllr Ian Harvey, mayor of Spelthorne, who oversaw the official opening of the Lammas Park gym, said: “The outdoor gyms are lots of fun and really good for both physical and mental wellbeing. They offer a good range of exercises, and you don’t need experience or to be in great shape to use them. Many people like the fact they are outdoors which means you can enjoy the fresh air and green space while you exercise.”

Cllr Ian Beardsmore, chair of the environment and sustainability committee, said: “The beauty of outdoor gyms is that they are free to use and suitable for everyone. You don’t need to join an expensive club to start to get more active. Regularly using the equipment can not only improve strength and fitness, but also mobility, balance and co-ordination. Just pop down to one of our parks and give it a try.”
