Walmart’s new HQ in Arkansas will include a fitness center with three pools and meditation garden

Tech companies aren’t the only ones with fancy campuses, food trucks and fitness centers, as Walmart joins in to encourage its 14,000 corporate employees to return to the office. 

Walmart’s new Bentonville, Arkansas, campus will open its door to employees in phases throughout 2025, and the company is using the new 350-acre dig as a way to entice its employees back to work. Its dangling a giant fitness center – equipped with a nearby childcare facility, three pools and a mediation garden. The Walton Family Whole Health & Fitness center and childcare facility will open in late 2023. 

The campus sits between Central Avenue and 14th Street, near Highway 102 in downtown Bentonville, where old company warehouse spaces and office buildings sat. The giant grocer already has knocked down the existing buildings and will replace them with 12 new office buildings, several amenity buildings, parking decks and green space throughout 2022. 

The cost of the program was not announced. 

‘By demolishing and recycling those existing buildings and offices, we are revitalizing the existing tract of land, contributing to the economic growth in the area and integrating with the broader Bentonville community development efforts,’ the company said on its website.

The campus will feature many walking and bike paths to integrate the ‘natural beauty of our Northwest Arkansas region,’ as well as include ‘natural lighting, warm interior finishes, mass timber constructions,’ and ‘views of trees, courtyards, landscapes, and lakes’ from inside and outside the offices. Employees will have access to Wi-Fi-enabled outdoor spaces that ‘support our flexible workplace.’ 

Like many other ‘campuses,’ Walmart’s will feature food trucks plazas in various locations across campus; coffee bars and grab-and-go stations that will offer organic and healthy snacks and meals; and in-office pantries on each floor for those who prefer to bring in their own food that will also have coffee and filtered water machines, food storage, and tables. 

The campus will also feature nine parking decks that hold more than 1,000 spaces each are will be equipped with bike and electric vehicle parking. The high number of parking spaces are designed to ‘enable associates to have a five-minute walk to adjacent office and amenity buildings.’ 

It will also encourage employees to use sustainable forms of transportation like bikes to get around.  

The retail giant said it is focusing on a greener and healthier space for workers to give employees ‘all the tools for wellbeing,’ which it said their fitness center will ‘encompass.’ 

The 360,000-square-foot facility will be located on the North Quad on the corner of Fifth and Southeast P Street. The building also features a café, a youth activity center, indoor and outdoor tennis courts, multipurpose courts, and fitness studios.  

Walmart said it drew ‘inspiration’ from Alice L. Walton’s Whole Health Institute when designing the center, saying it wanted to ‘integrate the mission and practices’ of a ‘purpose-driven approach’ to ‘prioritize health and well-being for every associate.’

‘When people feel supported, they’re much more likely to take advantage of opportunities to succeed – inside and outside of work,’ the company said. ‘With our associates at the heart of every decision in the design of our campus, we are investing in the amenities that they care about.’ 

The facility is ‘designed to leverage the healing power of natural daylight’ and will offer employees new ways to support their health with ‘robust, reimagined programming’ and education spaces, like a teaching kitchen, in addition to traditional workout equipment. 

Day care facilities will be located across from the fitness center and the 73,000-square-foot facility can accommodate up to 500 children. When the doors open, it will accept six-week-old to pre-K ages, and then eventually allow school children during the summer and after school, Axios reported. 

It comes equipped with classrooms and an outdoor plaza.  

Walmart’s new home office also will focus on sustainability. It is using locally sourced timber and large storm lakes that will collect rainwater and clean it. It also will continue its focus on trees and will transplant young trees from the current office on the new campus.
